The Cathedral of Saint Sava is the largest Orthodox church in the Balkans peninsula and the second largest Orthodox church in the world (larger is only rebuilt Church of Christ the Savior in Moscow).

The Cathedral of Saint Sava was built on the St. Sava’s plateau, where it was considered to be burned the Saint Sava‘s relics, founder of the Serbian Orthodox Church. The Cathedral of Saint Sava has a dominant position over a part of the city in which was built and is part of the recognizable symbols of Belgrade.

The Cathedral of Saint Sava was built in the so-called Serbian-Byzantine style with domes and bell towers of the total area of 3500 m2 in the ground and more 1500m2 of galleries. It is 82m high with a gold-plated cross at the top of the dome. This Orthodox church can receive around 10,000 believers and the choral gallery fit more than 800 members of choir.

At the top around of the central dome there is a terrace, very interesting panoramic viewpoint.

The building up of the Cathedral of Saint Sava began in 1935 after a long time searching for a best solution. It was several competitions announced and in the end is selected the project of architect Bogdan Nestorovic  who joined subsequently the architect Alexander Deroko.

During and after World War II, it was stopped construction on the church and a Society for the construction of the Cathedral he has ceased to exist. The German army, partisans and the Red Army used it as a parking place and a storehouse…

The building up of the Cathedral of Saint Sava continued in the 1984 under the direction of architect Branko Pesic. The largest construction project was to raise the central dome on the top after it was built on the land. With a special crane the finished central dome was setting up, millimeter by millimeter, and it lasted in a total 40 days. The central dome is weighs 4000 tons and on the top of the dome is the golden cross 12 meters tall and weighs 4 tons.
