The origin of the city Dubrovnik falls into the ancient times, and, as it has been the case with many ancient Mediterranean cities, it is also wrapped in legend veil. History of Dubrovnik, the city and later the state, the republic, began on the basis of disaster Hellenistic and later Roman city Epidauruma (Epidaurus – Epidaur), where was today’s Cavtat. Epidaurum existed from the moment of its destruction in the 7th century for at least 10 and perhaps over 12 centuries.
According to some historians Dubrovnik was established by the Greeks in the 7th century BC and it was the second city on the eastern Adriatic coast, next to Salona (Split), which was the same size as the Rome then. In that Roman time it was developed city center and an important naval-commercial Emporium. According to historians Epidaurum could have up to 40 000 citizens.
In the 4th century AD, a big earthquake destroyed Epidaurum, a part of the city sank into the sea where it lies today under the sand. The city was still existed, but it has experienced a complete disaster in the 7th century when he was captured and destroyed in the Avars and Slavs invasion. Its citizens settled along the coast of the island which they called Laws – which in Greek means rock from where came later names: Raus – Rausium – Ragusium – Ragusina. It was confirmed in the writings of the Byzantine emperor Constantine Porfirogenet from the 10th century and works of Pop Dukljanin from the 12th century. Otherwise, the first records of the name Dubrovnik can be found in documents of the Bosnian Kulin Ban from the 1189th. Epidauruma fate and historical development of Dubrovnik is very similar to the development of Venice and Split.
During the 7th century Slavs settled in Dalmatia just nearby Ragusium (as then called), across the sea shore, and established city Dubrovnik . It was named by the the oak forests that are still in this area called Dubrava (Apr – Oak in the old Slavic language).
The island is located only 10 meters away from the shore and later, during the X and XI century, because of dunes shore between mainland and the island, became increasingly lower, at the end of the thay were connected by the end of XI century. In this connection-mole is today’s Stradun. Later, at the end of XII century both settlements were established and surrounded by the same walls.

Republica Ragusina

In the life of this small state happend so many important things, which were definitely obligated the whole world. Historical treasure of Republic Ragusina in its poetry, literature, language, architectural, maritime, trade, diplomacy, democracy … leads us to think about justice and destiny. In the world there are over 150 countries today, it isn’t known their exact number. Many of them will exist for centuries and they will not contribute to the world heritage. It is so big loss that the Dubrovnik Republic no longer exists!
It was a small but significant country then in the world, the country with a style, spirit and wisdom … It felt a kind of medieval atmosphere there, behind the city walls was life described on the best way in comedy and literature by Marin Držić …a little bit bizarre lifestyle that was similar to that one in Venice …
Establishment of the Dubrovnik Republic was in X and XI century, starting with the constitution and construction of the city Dubrovnik.
During its long existence created a representational state that thanks to the world famous school of diplomatic skill, managed to preserve their independence for many centuries. It was really skill in that time, knowing that all of the Mediterranean and European power centries had pretensions to Dubrovnik, particularly the Republic of Venice which was the largest competitor in the maritime and trade on the Adriatic and the Mediterranean coasts. Through the power of its own diplomacy Dubrovnik were tokk an ideal place and relatively good relations with the whole world. They were often forced to buy own freedom with money…
The fact that, with the Pope permission, the Dubrovnik Republic established trade with the Levant at the time of big conflict of Christians and Muslims, and that since the beginning of the XV century, had never been in a war, is telling us enough about the skills of diplomacy Dubrovnik.
It is impresive the fact that Dubrovnik is one of the first European countries that recognized the independence of the United States of America
Also, Dubrovnik has set high standards in the field of democracy: the head of the country was duke, who had been chosen by the citizens. Also, they had a constitution ie. the statute and the senate. The law had on equal terms for everyone.
It is not possible to describe exciting Drubrovnik’s history on a piece of paper but, as this is the only an article, it would be missed many legends, intrigue and adventure of Dubrovnik’s citizens and their state.
The end of the Dubrovnik Republic Dawn occurred in the XIX century. When the French were in the invasion to Kotor, they were asked Dubrovnik for pass through and occupy it without waiting response of the Dubrovnik government. Napoleon made a decision on 31st January 1808th to abolish the Dubrovnik Republic.
The Dubrovnik Republic made its last effort in 1815 in the Vienna Congress in order to re-establish statehood, but it was in vain, Congress didn’t consider request of Dubrovnik Republic, even didn’t allow their representative to attend that Congress.
The Dubrovnik Republic was gone forever.
